A biohacking workout, or human performance enhancement, is the practice of using information and technologies to augment our biology to enhance human performance. I believe it all started when I was one week into Crossfit. I remember the first time I walked into the Crossfit gym and saw all of these fit, excited people bouncing around in their own fitness revolution. One of them was even an older man in his sixties. I had to hear more about it, and so I started trying it out myself, and the rest is history.

A Biohacking Workout in 2014
In 2014, there were more than twelve million people who reported using a device or app to help them exercise. These devices and apps are more than just electronic gadgets that make our workouts easier. They have become a kind of holistic, wearable “tech” that supports us, monitors us, and helps us to exercise. These mini-nutritionists monitor the quality of our diet, have tracked our fitness and progress, and have provided a community to hold us accountable for getting our health right. And because our workouts are ongoing, these devices can get more personal and interactive to keep us motivated. Some of these devices and apps have even come to us in the form of smartwatches like the Apple Watch, and some even work in conjunction with existing devices.
What Biohacking Workouts are Like Today
Today, a biohacking workout is the best thing you could experience. We are currently in a biohacking revolution. I have a biology lab that uses gadgets to modify my physiology. I can increase or decrease the amount of oxygen in my blood during exercise. We use genomics and neuroengineering to unlock our psychological power and use it for good or evil. In these technologies, which is a branch of applied biology, scientists are exploring how to increase human performance. It turns out, in fact, that the human body is a lot more than just our brain.
In addition to human-enhancement technologies, biohacking has impacted fitness in other ways. In the past, we used weighted or shock-wave machines to increase muscle mass and fat loss. Now, these expensive and not portable machines are being replaced by high-intensity hybrid training or TRX bands. Traditional weightlifting equipment is still used, but the equipment is smaller and lighter.

And, of course, we all know that it is not enough to simply go to the gym and run on a treadmill. Biohacking Isn’t a Trend Anymore
Biohacking is no longer just a buzzword in Silicon Valley. We are now experiencing an explosion of new health technologies that are improving our health in small ways which we don’t even think about. In five years, I can envision technology and wearable technology impacting and transforming our health, and even how we eat. I can envision a future in which tech allows us to live healthier, longer lives.
